Diagram 64D 18ft 10ton Loco Coal Wagon with End DoorThis design is a variant of Diagram 64C by the fitting of an end door so producing a wagon that could be emptied by an end tipping device. The coaling plants at Carlisle Upperby and Camden, built in 1919 and 1920 respectively, had end-tipping facilities. This is consistent with the period 1918 to 1921 when this type of wagon was built. This method had been in use for many years to 'coal' ships at Holyhead from Steamboat coal wagons, D66. This design will be discussed separately. The 1909 WSAB lists all the 10ton Loco Coal Wagons in one table so it is not possible to separately identify these D64D vehicles. However, the 1937 LMS source provides a table which shows the following building details for D64D wagons: 1919 - 20, 1920 - 35, and 1921 - 31, making a total of 105 vehicles built to this design and still in service in 1937. Since these Diagram 64D variants grew out of the original Diagram 64 stock and the quantity of Loco Coal wagons remained constant it is almost certain that the variants were revenue replacements and therefore took the number of the smaller older wagon each replaced. Consequently, it is reasonable to use any of the D64 numbers provided. Also there is photographic evidence for numbers 10731 and 16941 as end door Loco Coal Wagons. See below.
P.E. collection, JPR neg. X62Q0 on reverse, no. 16941
This photograph taken at Moor Row in 1937 shows the end door mechanism. The hinge is visible across the top planks and the locking bar rotates about a central pivot with a handle on the right. The white diagonal stripe points to and indicates the door end. No register number for this wagon is present. Origin unknown at present.
The side elevation shown above is taken from Earlestown drawing no. 954 [HMRS No. 1099] and shows the D64D, end door, version of the 18ft Loco Coal Wagon. It was developed for use at those mechanical coaling plants which had only end-tipping facilities. |
