Diagram 64A Loco Hopper Wagon to carry 10tons

Just one wagon was built to this design in 1912 when the design of hopper vehicles was being considered for use at the new mechanical coaling plants that were being built around the L&NWR system. A Goods Conference minute 22277 dated 1911 ordered the replacement of D64 Loco Coal wagons with 10ton Hoppers. However, it was overtaken by events and the decision was made to increase the capacity to 15tons and this resulted in the development of the Diagram 64B design while no further 10ton Loco Coal Hoppers were built.

The number of the only one built is recorded in the Diagram Book as 17353. There is no known photograph.

This extract from a GA drawing, Earlestown no. 882, from the LNWR Society Collection, shows the prototype 10ton Loco Coal Hopper wagon, Diagram 64A. The wagon's number, 17353, would have first been issued in 1863, which indicates that it was built as a replacement for a scrapped older Diagram 64 wagon.

Earlestown GA no. 882, LNWR Soc Collection.
