Diagram 64 Loco Coal Wagon to carry 10tonsIn the 1902 Wagon Stock Age book there were 3020 of the D64 16ft wagons in stock all of which had been built between the year of introduction 1869 and 1902 when the book was drawn-up. The body was 16ft long by 7ft 7½in wide. The wheelbase was the standard 9ft long and the sides were 3ft high. In those days of cheap labour all coaling of engines was done manually so there were no doors in the sides, ends or bottom. The planks were 2¾in thick to withstand the repeated loading of 10 tons of coal. Originally, simple toggle brakes were fitted to just two wheels on one side only. However, over time later brakes were fitted as wagons were overhauled or renewed as later versions. Numbering All the numbers between 162xx and 176xx were assigned to Loco Coal and Coke wagons in the 1862/3 re-numbering scheme. The following are specimen numbers found in photographs and written records such as coal invoices: 16218, 16422, 16472, 16534, 16742, 16796, 16882, 17132, 17175, 17205, 17218, 17254, 17316, 17539, 17560, 17561, 17614, 17733.
Official NRM/ETN 79/79A of No. 45573, a number that was first used in 1881.
Earlestown No.49 dated 1.11.1899 [HMRS No. 1145]. The original tare weight was quoted as 5.13.0. in the Diagram Book but the addition of double brakes both sides, DBBS, increased the tare weight to 6.4.0. |
