Men of the above grades will be eligible for promotion to
the higher classes as vacancies occur, subject to merit and satisfactory
conduct. Upon promotion to a higher class they will be advanced to the
minimum rate of that class.
“Special” Class positions at salaries over
£350 per annum are also open as vacancies occur to men of the above
grades who qualify for such positions.
These salaries to be inclusive, and all present
allowances which are distinct from, or additional to, the salary (uniform
excepted) to be abolished, except as otherwise provided.
Where men of the above grades are required to live in a
house or station apartments provided by the Company, rent, including
rates and taxes, to be charged according to the local value of the house
or apartments, but in no case shall the deduction exceed 15 per cent.
of the man’s salary.
2. — War Bonus Adjustments
Men of the above grades will be entitled to a War Bonus
of £60 per annum plus 20 per cent. of the new salary, and such War
Bonus will be either absorbed or reduced by an amount corresponding to
the increase in salary granted upon introduction of the new scales. (For
examples see Appendix “C.”)
In cases where men of these grades have been granted a
house free of charge, free firing, lighting, etc., or a sum in lieu thereof,
the value of these concessions to be assessed in each case, and the amount
added to the existing salary and taken into consideration in assessing the
amount of War Bonus (if any) to be retained.
3. — Residue of War Bonus remaining after Application
of the New Scales.
For every advance in salary subsequent to the introduction
of the new scales, 50 per cent, of such advance shall be deducted from the
remaining War Bonus (if any), independent of the fall in the cost of living.
In addition to this, the floating bonus to be subject
to fluctuation in accordance with the cost of living as shown in the
tables prepared by the Ministry of Labour. Taking the present cost of
living at 125 per cent. above normal, a rise or fall of a full five points
to carry an increase or a decrease, as the case may be, of £5 per
annum floating bonus. Provided, however, that no reduction in any man’s
floating bonus shall take place as the result of a fall in the cost of
living, before September 30th, 1920, after which date any necessary
adjustments will be made.
