Royal Visit to Crewe 1913

Queen Mary and King George V visit Crewe

Journal Vol.3 No.3 mentioned a plaque inside Crewe North Junction signal box, the current whereabouts of which remains a mystery. It apparently recorded Alderman Manning’s term in office as Mayor of Crewe at the time of the Royal visit in 1913. Through Ted Talbot the Society was able to contact John Manning, his grandson, who kindly provided this photograph taken on Crewe station at the time.

Queen Mary and King George V are clearly visible in the centre and Alderman Manning has his back to the camera. The gentleman on the right wearing a wig is presumably reading a welcome statement. The Royal Train is standing at Platform 1 and note the garlands hanging from the station roof.
