Preserved D444a CCT

Ex-LNWR D444a Covered Carriage Truck

Ex-LNWR D.444a Covered Carriage Truck, photographed on the Nene Valley Railway in 2001 by Simon Fountain. Several of these vans were converted for use as Pooley’s tool vans for servicing weigh bridges, and that probably explains why so many (four) have survived into preservation.

None of them has been restored however, and at least one has now been removed from its under frame and will probably be broken up, so they are worth looking after. This example carried departmental number DM395361 when withdrawn and looks to be in sound condition.
