This super picture is a gorgeous classic worth examining in detail:
It shows ‘G1’ class 0-8-0 No.1487 rousing the
town as it sets out from Northampton past Duston West signal box
with
sixty wagons of coal for London. Anyone who has heard one of these
splendid engines cannot help but hear the delightful sound effects in
their mind as they picture it climbing away into the distance, the
wagons trundling a weighty thunk-thunk, thunk-thunk, thunk-thunk as
they pass.
Just look at the sheer length of that train! Yet No.1487 will keep
it at 28—32 mph all the way whenever it is given free rein.
This was the LNWR keeping industry and the business of Britain at
work. Can you see the man leaning on a pram, watching in the
field?
