Small-boilered ‘C’ class 0-8-0 No.2529 hauls
a typically mixed goods train past Crewe sorting sidings , heading
north in May 1905. Ahead lie the goods tunnels allowing the goods
lines to bypass the station. The first five wagons are LNWR, the
first being a 15ft 6in van and the second and fifth opens to
Diagram 4 or 9, typically sheeted over with tarpaulin wagon sheets.
Sixth and seventh are vertically ribbed vans belonging to the Furness
Railway that operated in the south of the Lake District. Note the
typical LNWR signals and the white-rimmed coal stack to the left,
painted to deter pilfering.
