No.1817 ‘A’ class  0-8-0 built 1895, seen here ready for action while quite new. The driver , with the itchy neck, is most likely pausing while oiling  the engine while the fireman  looks on. Their engine is scrupulously clean and looks in superb condition. The bulb-shaped devices above and to the left of the driver are valve-chest lubricators . There is a white diamond in the top lamp socket below the chimney
