No.3217 is a ‘Special Tank’ , seen here at
Crewe South, with a flimsy cab roof fitted. The curved shape of the
original cab back plate can clearly be made out, including the two
‘porthole’ windows. The cover to the water filler on top
of the saddle tank has been left open, and the step the crew used to
get up to it can be seen immediately above the prominent pipe at the
base of the saddle tank. Below and in front of the cab is a ground
signal , used to control shunting movements.
