A 17in ‘Coal Engine’ seen on service with the Railway Operating Division (ROD ) in France during the First World War: Soldiers pose with No.3408 at a suitable distance from the Western Front, sometime between 1914 and 1918. As with all the other railway companies, the LNWR turned itself into a munitions manufacturer during both World Wars and supplied engines dutifully.
