Mr. Francis W. Webb (extreme left) standing beside his
team that have built a 17in ‘Coal Engine’ at
Crewe in 25½ hours in February 1878.
The running number was actually 1140 – 2153 is the Crewe Works
number. Unfortunately Altoona Works (USA) shortly cut this record to
16¼ hours. Then the Great Eastern Railway built a class Y14
0-6-0 and tender at Stratford in only 9 hours 47 minuets,
in December 1891 — but this was no second-rate job: the engine
completed 36,000 miles before painting and lasted 43 years in
service!
A future
CME is also in the picture. C.J. Bowen Cooke was an apprentice
at the time and he is the tall lad standing on the left beside the buffer plank.
