No.3209 is a 17in ‘Coal Engine’ , paused at
Manchester (London Road) as it comes off the Deansgate line. The way
to tell a ‘Coal Engine’ from a ‘DX’ or a
‘Cauliflower’ is, a ‘DX’ has small
connecting rod splashers with slots whereas a ‘Coal
Engine’ has none, but both have straight foot plates
whereas a ‘Cauliflower’ has humps over each wheel, which are
also larger. This super shot clearly shows the cast H-section spoke
wheels and wooden brake blocks .
