Mr. Ramsbottom Explain 'Ramsbottom, John (1814—1897)' invented water troughs Explain 'Water Trough' and they were invaluable in allowing engines to pick up water at speed. The crew simply dropped a scoop (a ‘dip’) into the trough from the tender and water was swept up with ease. All you had to do was take care to wind the scoop up before the end of the troughs!
