No.14 ‘Vulcan’, spotlessly clean, was built by
R.&W. Hawthorn & Co. in 1860 for the Whitehaven Junction
Railway . Note the tender only has four
wheels, so the range would be
quite limited. It was scrapped in 1868 after only eight years in
service, so this photo was taken less than twenty-four years after
the invention of photography. Many of the class were sold to
collieries and minor railways.
