No.1966 is a 2-4-0T built at Crewe Explain 'Crewe Works' in 1848 as a tender Explain 'Tender Locomotive' engine, No.46 ‘Medea’. In 1870 it was rebuilt as a tank Explain 'Tank Locomotive', then renumbered 1966 in 1875. Note the early boiler mountings with two unprotected safety valves Explain 'Safety Valve'; weather boards Explain 'Weather Board' front and rear; toolboxes on side tanks Explain 'Side Tank'; screw couplings Explain 'Screw Coupling'; the driver Explain 'Driver' with his hand on the screw reverser Explain 'Screw Reverse'; and spindly connecting rod Explain 'Connecting Rod' and piston shaft Explain 'Piston Rod' — surely riskily thin! In the background are rather overloaded locomotive coal wagons marked with the LNWR’s illiterate diamond symbol.
