No.1966 is a 2-4-0T built at Crewe in 1848 as a tender
engine, No.46 ‘Medea’. In 1870 it was rebuilt as a tank ,
then renumbered 1966 in 1875. Note the early boiler mountings with
two unprotected safety valves ; weather boards
front and rear; toolboxes on side tanks ; screw couplings ;
the driver with his hand on the screw reverser ; and
spindly connecting rod and piston shaft
— surely riskily thin! In the background are rather overloaded
locomotive coal wagons marked with the LNWR’s illiterate diamond
symbol.
