After the ‘C’ class were found to be under-boilered,
Mr. Whale fitted the large boiler used on the ‘F’ class
to ‘A’ class conversions, a total of 63 engines. They
became very popular with enginemen, having great hauling power.
Features such as Whales long tapered stock buffers were added but
some still retained the flush profile ‘A’ class leading
crank pin , originally needed to fit behind the ‘A’ class
slide bars.
Distinguishing points are the large single sandbox (per
side), flush with the front of the smokebox and the bare flat plates
below the smokebox door, devoid of projections to cover piston rods.
Later sandboxes were added below the cab. Some appeared in LNWR
lined black but some were unlined at various stages.
