Welcome to the Carriages Virtual Display

The carriage exhibition was first displayed at March 1999 in The Railway Age, Crewe. The exhibition included text, photographs and some models but as it was aimed at families it avoided technical discussions. This virtual display is a further development, without the models but with a few more photographs. Please roam around it. You do not have to ‘do’ the display in the order we have suggested; many links allow you to take your own path.

The railways used many common words in strange ways and so words with specific railway connotations are flagged with a green/blue diamond Explain 'Bell Code'; you can click on the diamond to see what the word means and then use your browser’s back button to return to the exhibition.
