The final design of WCJS Explain 'WCJS – West Coast Joint Stock' corridor sleeping car Explain 'Sleeping Car', 68ft long and 9ft wide, dating from 1914. They had wide end entrance vestibules though still, as may be seen in the photograph, slightly recessed in the side of the coach. There were ten single bed compartments but the doors between pairs of adjacent compartments could be unlocked, provided both parties agreed. There was a smoking compartment and an attendant’s compartment at one end, the only toilet being at the other. The curious vertical white strips by the windows are hinged windshields. This design (and the identical sleeping cars of LNWR Diagram 15) was the basis for the standard LMS sleeping cars from 1923 onwards.
