102 WCJS covered fish vans to this design were built in the years before 1914 – an indication of the value of fish traffic. The most important train on which WCJS fish vans ran was the 2.00pm Aberdeen–Broad Street (convenient for Billingsgate fish market).

South of Carlisle, this train called only at Preston (detaching vans for Manchester and Liverpool), Crewe (detaching traffic for Bristol, South Wales, North Wales and Birmingham), Rugby and Willesden Junction. It arrived at Broad Street at 3.22am. The journey time of 13 hours 22 minutes was comparable with the timing of the fastest passenger express trains.
