6-wheeled Dynamometer Car

A dynamometer car measures the pulling power of a locomotive. Built in 1894, this car was placed between the locomotive the rest of the train. It had a drive from the middle axle to record speed, and a spring and lever arrangement connected to the drawbar (the connection to the locomotive) which could record a pull up to 11½ tons. The measurements were recorded on moving paper for later analysis.

Despite an 8-wheeled bogie Dynamometer car being built in 1908, this 6-wheeler was still used on many occasions. It would be interesting to know how she rode in 1904 when “Precursor” was first trialled.
