Photographed at Lees on the Oldham branch in July 1909, the railmotor Explain 'Rail Motor' was an attempt at reducing turn-round times to combat road competition. The fully-enclosed steam locomotive can be made out in the driving compartment at the left, the two driving wheels below it being coupled. The passenger section of both coaches are open saloons. In this case a 21ft horsebox Explain 'Horsebox' has been attached. The background shows a typical Lancashire mill.

This was the seventh and last railmotor built by the LNWR and had a more powerful engine unit. The others were all 57ft long. The more powerful engine was required in order to haul a trailer, as illustrated.
