Three LNWR dining cars to diagram 37 were built in 1914; they were 9ft wide, elliptical roofed Explain 'Elliptical-roof Coach', end-kitchen cars and, though designed as third-class Explain 'Third Class', ran for most of their lives as composites Explain 'Composite', with sixteen first-class Explain 'First Class' and sixteen third-class Explain 'Third Class' seats – the third class seating next to the kitchen. These diners had entrance vestibules almost the full width of the carriage – ie the doors were only slightly recessed in the sides. After experimenting with loose seating, the LNWR reverted to fixed seating in these vehicles.
