No. 1913 ‘CANOPUS’ “City to City” express (7.45am Wolverhampton and 8.20 Birmingham to Broad Street; 5.45 Broad Street to Birmingham and Wolverhampton). Train has one 12-wheeled, the diner and three 8-wheeled coaches. North London signals and carriage are in the background.
The train is clearly in service and not simply the carriages posed. The formation shown seems to have been that of the marshalling circular, except that the second and third carriages have changed places. Though no doubt the coaches were the most modern of the time, and probably included the single diner to diagram 37, built for this train, the “City to City” express was formed of standard stock, except that one vehicle, a brake-composite, was fitted with a “typewriting compartment”. Only expresses to or from the Black Country were so favoured — a brake composite on the 8.05am Wolverhampton–Euston, which returned on the 4.45pm Euston–Dudley had been similarly converted. |
