This coach is typical of those built for main-line use in the 1870’s. It is 30ft 6in long, only 7ft 9in wide and 7ft 2in high — very much smaller than today's coaches. Note the underframe Explain 'Underframe' is highly decorated — look at the detailed lining on the axle guards Explain 'Axle Guard' (the vertical frame holding the axles in place).

The carriage had just been converted to the simple vacuum brake Explain 'Vacuum Brake' (the vacuum cylinder Explain 'Vacuum Cylinder' can be seen at a slight angle just in front of the centre axle) but the angled rodding and brake blocks Explain 'Brake Blocks' of the Clark & Webb chain brake Explain 'Chain Brake' just removed have been kept.

The buffers Explain 'Buffer' are the long-stroke type and the head stocks Explain 'Headstock' (or buffer beam) they are mounted on still has ogee-shaped ends. The rings along the edge of the roof were to carry the Harrison train alarm Explain 'Harrison Alarm' cord. The photo was taken in April 1881 outside Crewe Explain 'Crewe Works' paint shop.
