Sleeping composites were provided on routes where there was some demand sleeping accommodation but not enough to justify a full first-class sleeping car , for example Euston-Dundee and Liverpool-Glasgow.
Those to diagram 28 were rebuilt between 1905 and 1908 from 50ft arc-roofed WCJS composites and brake composites. The rebuilding consisted of removing the first-class end of the carriage and replacing it with a sleeping section (for first-class passengers) virtually identical to the sleeping cars of the time. The arc roof was converted into a clerestory over the whole length of the vehicle. It was only during the 1930s that berths were provided for third-class passengers, in four-berth compartments in composite and third-class sleeping cars.
Sleeping composite 124 ran on the Euston-Dundee service and was detached from the main overnight Euston-Aberdeen train at Perth (and, in the up direction, attached at Perth). |
